‘Welcome too Poo Harbour’ signs being repaired after cheeky protest

STICKERS renaming Poole as ‘Poo’ in protest at sewage being dumped in Dorset waters are being removed.

BCP Council staff are in the process of tracking down and removing stickers from dozens of signs around the town, which were altered as part of a protest by ad creatives Joe Foale-Groves and Gagandeep Jhuti over the weekend.

The pair also set up a website – www.pooharbour.com – where people can send a ‘postcard from Poo’ to their MP, complaining about sewage being released into waterways.

Cllr Andy Hadley, cabinet member for climate response, environment and energy at the council, said: “Our teams are in the process of checking all ‘Borough of Poole’ signage and will remove the stickers that have been used to cover up parts of them.”

Meanwhile, a council spokesperson added how the authority is “working with Wessex Water to reduce stormwater entering the sewerage system, and householders can help by looking at ways of limiting rainwater runoff from their properties”.

And a Wessex Water spokesperson said overflows worked automatically, with discharges increasing last year due to it being “the fourth wettest year since our records began”.

“We agree that storm overflows are outdated and we’re spending more than £3 million every month to progressively improve them, alongside record investment in sewerage infrastructure and water quality monitoring,” they added.

“Meanwhile, our £30 million project to upgrade Bournemouth’s Holdenhurst Water Recycling Centre will increase sewage treatment capacity to further protect the area’s excellent beaches.”
